Mental Health First Aid England®
This internationally recognised course teaches you how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. It won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially prevent a crisis.
Research and evaluation shows that taking part in an MHFA® course raises awareness and mental health, can reduce stigma, boosts knowledge and confidence and promotes early intervention.
What will I get from a Mental Health First Aid England® course?
- Recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe.
- How to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. This could include self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and more.
- Gain an understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle stigma in the world around you.
- Access to continuous support – three years’ access to MHFAider® support and benefits which includes 24/7 digital support through the MHFAider Support App®. Youth MHFA® 2-Day
One in ten young people experience a mental health issue at any one time, whilst suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 5-19. In an average group of 30 15-year-olds – seven are likely to have been bullied, six may be self-harming, and one could have experienced the death of a parent. Academic pressure, social media, bullying, poverty, lack of availability of professional mental health support – all have been named by various sources as contributing to this epidemic of poor mental health in our young people. Key figures in a young person’s life – parents, family members, teachers, tutors, carers, youth workers – can often spot when a young person is struggling but may not know how best to help.
This course is for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18. It will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issue from getting worse.
As an MHFAider® you will be able to:
- Understand young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
- Learn practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Build your confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
- Enhance your interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
- Gain knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
- Develop the ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
- Create a toolbox to look after your own mental wellbeing
Cost: £300 per person
This can be run in-house for a minimum of 10 people, alternatively we may be able to collaborate with smaller companies to have enough delegates to successfully run the course.
