Suicide is regarded as one of the last taboos but with alarming statistics around male suicide both locally and nationally it’s time to tackle the subject head on.

Guernsey Mind’s SMS (Stop Male Suicide) campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage conversation in our community of the severity and impact of male suicide, and of mental health issues among men.  Talking is key. People often struggle to talk to the ones closest to them. This is especially true for men and boys.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men between the ages of 20yr and 50yr. More than cancer and heart disease. This is significantly higher than in females, in fact men are a third more likely to take their own life than women. Local statistics back national trends. In the period 2010-2012, 20 deaths by Suicide of Undetermined Injury were recorded in total in the island. Of those, 13 were male, 7 were female. From 2013-2015, 12 deaths by Suicide or Undetermined Injury were recorded in total. Of those 12, 10 were male, 2 were female.

If you’re concerned that someone you know is struggling, let them know you’re there. Send them a text, send them an email, make that phone call. You could save a life.

 

ABOUT OUR CAMPAIGN CHAMPIONS:

Gavin St Pier – President of the States of Guernsey Policy & Resources committee who lost his brother to suicide.

Nick Cannon – lives with depression, has considered taking his own life, and is now making good progress in his recovery.

Phil Surry and Richard Clarke – started up an informal support group where men can talk openly and non-judgementally about their lives (‘Man Club’).

Mark Smith – leading the Men’s Shed project in St Peters which provides a space where men can work together on woodwork / metal work etc projects and as a bi-product, talk shoulder to shoulder about their physical and mental health.

Lee Corbet – well-known for his commentary on the local motorcycle and motor racing scene, Lee suffered PTSD after a crash which almost cost him his life. He also sadly lost his brother to suicide.
